Default Settings Window Not Opening

Postby ile on Mon May 09, 2005 10:10 pm

I just installed MyGeneration on a XP box and it starts up great. The problem I have is when I try to open the Default Setting Window, it never opens and does not show an error.

Have you seen this before?

I have heard of this, let me do some research, try closing MyGeneration, deleting the DockManager.config file and restarting?

Tried Removing the .config file but no luck

I removed the file and restarted but no luck. When the default settings menu is selected the Memory Usage goes to 500+ MB and no screen is ever displayed.

Was this ever resolved? I have the same problem and I have followed the advice in the other post but I can't get the default window to open either.

I have a Sql server running on the local machine where I have installed MyGeneration and when I select the default window option the machine just trashes for a couple of minutes and then nothing.

I've installed MyGeneration on another machine onthe network and it works fine. The problem machine is XP Home - is that an issue?

Thanks

Are you running SP2? Is the firewall active?

No SP2 (SP1 is installed) and the firewall is disabled.

I am behind a hardware firewall via a DSL router so I have turned off XP's firewall.

Take the DefaultSettings.xml file from the Settings folder on machine that works and copy it to your machine. MyGeneration should at least work at that point. Meanwhile, let me do some research, give that a try though. You won't have to open default settings at that point, however, it would be interesting to see if it works at that point.

Sorry - I should have been clearer - MyGeneration works fine except I cannot open the default settings option to set up the connection to my database. I have tried manually editing the defaultsettings.xml file but no good.

On the machine that works when I ran MyGen for the first time the default settings window came up automatically and everything worked fine - I connected to the SQL server running on the machine where MyGen will not open the default settings window.

It would be interesting to know what MyGen is doing when it first starts because it seems to take a while to come up,

Thanks

Make sure you have these settings:

<DefaultSettings Version=\"1.1.3.0\" FirstTime=\"false\">
<Setting Name=\"CheckForNewBuild\" value=\"False\" />

My guess is that you cannot open the Default Settings dialog because of the OLEDB Data Link dialog, it's not on your machine or something, probably MDAC related.

I've just copied the default settings file from the machine that works and pasted it over the version I have on this machine. Same thing - if I select Default Settings the machine just thrashes away at almost 100% CPU for a couple of minutes then nothing - returns to the main program window.

I was just wondering if it might have something to do with the version of the framework I'm using. On this machine I installed the framework that came with Studio.net 2003 but on the other machine I downloaded the framework from MS.

Regards

Well, you could try that CheckForNewBuild thing I mentioned above, you could also try this command:

Code: Select all
C:\\WINDOWS\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v1.1.4322>regasm \"c:\\program
files\\mygeneration\\mymeta.dll\" /tlb:MyMeta.tlb

but I'm not sure that's it. What version of the MDAC do you have installed?

OK - I've run the command you mentioned in your last post a couple of times and I've got the CheckForNewBuild set to false.

I have Mdac version 2.7 SP1 installed.

Mike,

I've installed MyGeneration on another machine and it works fine so I'll just continue on with this machine and ignore the other I think.

Thanks anyway,

Sorry, Tony, I just don't know what is causing it, we've seen this like 5 times in like 70,000 downloads, it's rare but when it happens to you it's critical, I'm glad you have the other machine.

Well the good thing is we are all software developers so we all know what it's like trying to find a bug that elusive :)

This machine is a lot faster than the other (which was a laptop by the way) so it's a good thing really - made me get off my butt and do something about it.

Thanks again,

Tony

I even can not regasm MyMeta.dll\" /tlb:MyMeta.tlb

Postby skedin on Tue Oct 11, 2005 2:01 pm

My environment is Win XP SP2, .NET 1.1 SP1, VS.NET 2003.
I use MySQL 4.1.14 essentail.
My language is C#.

Like the topic, I even cannot regasm MyMeta.dll.
I got: Access to the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Record is denied.
But I logon with the Admin role.

I've seen other users not have access to the registry, see if one of these helps?

I have solved my problem

Postby skedin on Tue Oct 11, 2005 5:16 pm

Thanks Mike

After reading your Google references
I've found that my registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Record) write permission is off
even I login with admin role

I turn it on and regasm MyMeta.dll again
everything is just fine
Now I have \"Default Setting\" dialog

I \"guess\" this is the .NET SP1 security issue

Thanks again

I have solved my problem with a different cause.

Verify if the service 'COM+ System Application' is running. I resolved my problem re-activating the service.
